Jaish leader killed in Quetta gun battle

QUETTA: Security forces killed the leader of a banned anti-Shia religious outfit during a targeted operation early on Tuesday at Eastern Bypass on the outskirts of Quetta, security officials said.

Frontier Corps and intelligence agents acted on a tip to conduct the raid, according to FC spokesman Khan Wasey.

Jaish-ul-Islam’s chief, Mehmood-ur-Rehman Rind, was killed along with two other militants, he said.

Jaish-ul-Islam has claimed many of the recent attacks on Hazara community in Balochistan province.

“Rind was involved in targeted killings and planning suicide attacks on the Hazara community and many other attacks,” Wasey told Reuters.

Heavy weapons including rockets and grenades were used in the battle, which lasted for several hours. One Frontier Corps officer was wounded in the exchange of fire. Security sources said that the killed militants were planning attack on a religious procession on 21st of Ramazan in the provincial capital. Religious literature, a suicide jacket and weapons were also seized from the compound of the militants.
