Representational PhotoThe activists of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front and an independent lawmaker from north Kashmir Wednesday staged protests here against the torching of a flag bearing Islamic scripture in Rajouri area yesterday.

Curfew was imposed in Rajouri yesterday after communal tension following the burning of IS flag by VHP activists.

Muslims protested against the outfit saying that the flag has an Arabic verse from Qur’an, Kalima Tayyibah, written on it.

JKLF activists assembled at Residency Road against the torching of the flag and staged protests. Policemen deployed in the area swung into action and dispersed the protesters, witnesses said.

The independent MLA from Langate, Er Rashid and his supporters also tried to take out a procession from Residency road towards Lal Chowk as a mark of protest against the incident, they added.

Rashid along with some supporters were taken into preventive custody and have been lodged at police station Kothibagh.

It may be mentioned that the Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh had yesterday told mediapersons that the VHP activists involved in the act can’t be arrested as they were protesting against a terror outfit.

He said that staging protests was a part of democracy.
