LeJ terrorist arrest for killing of Allama Ali Akbar Kumaili

Police on Monday claimed to have arrested a suspect allegedly involved in the targeted killing of a Shia cleric and son of known scholar Allama Abbas Kumaili last year.

“The held suspect, Muhammad Nasir alias Dhobi alias BBC, was arrested in the Manghopir area after an encounter,” Karachi police chief Ghulam Qadir Thebo told a press conference. “He is associated with the banned Lashkar-i-Jhangvi (LJ) and during the initial investigation it emerged that his group was involved in 29 sectarian killings.”

He said that two of his aides had been arrested and languishing in prison.

He said that the group was quite active for the past few years in Karachi and had targeted many people on sectarian grounds. A special team, set up under the DIG-West, tracked, traced and finally held them after ‘consistent efforts’, he added.

In September, 2014, assailants shot dead Allama Ali Akbar Kumaili, the elder son of former senator Kumaili, and wounded his two guards in a targeted attack in Azizabad. The armed men sprayed his car with bullets as soon as he along with the two guards left his industrial unit in Bhangoria Goth.

Ali Kumaili, father of four, was known for his oratory skills and for his style of addressing Majalis-i-Aza. His father, Allama Abbas Kumaili, is also the chief of the Jafaria Alliance Pakistan.

In response to a question, the city police chief said during the past few weeks the law enforcement agencies had identified more than 20 madressahs in the city which “needed to be monitored for their activities”.

“There are several madressahs in Karachi,” said police chief Thebo. “Not every madressah is being monitored as most of them are doing the job they are meant to do.”

“We have completed a survey under the national action plan and found some 24 madressahs whose activities are being monitored very closely by the police and action will be taken if anything emerges during that monitoring,” he added.
