Three cops, including a Station House Officer, and a cab driver were injured when suspected militants fired on a police ‘naka’ party in Mirgund area on Srinagar-Baramulla highway late Friday evening, sources said. The condition of the SHO is stated to be ‘very critical’.

A police official said suspected militants in a Tavera vehicle (JK 01 Q-8792) fired at a police party in Mirgund at around 9.15 pm after the cops signaled it to stop at a local check-post. “In the firing, SHO Police Post Pattan Muhammad Saleem and three other cops were injured. The driver of the Tavera vehicle also suffered injuries,” the police official said.

Two of the cops are said to be the Personal Security Officials (PSOs) of the SHO, namely Dilshad Ahmad and Mushtaq Ahmad. The driver of the vehicle was identified by a police official as Bilal Ahmad.

He said the SHO, Muhammad Saleem of Tangdhar, was rushed to a hospital in a “very critical condition.”  “He is being treated at Army’s base hospital in Srinagar, but his condition is very critical,” the police official said. “The militants managed to escape from the spot. The area has been cordoned off to nab the attackers.”

News agency PTI said an alert has been sounded in Pattan and its adjoining areas after the firing incident.

A report said cops cordoned off Batamaloo area of Srinagar for searches late Friday night.
