Jammu:
The border district Rajouri today witnessed uneasy calm in view of suspension of Muslim community’s shutdown call for two-days.
The community has been demanding arrest of VHP and Bajrang Dal activists involved in the assault on a local resident Mohammed Hamid and his wife.
After observing complete shutdown in Rajouri on Saturday and Sunday, the Imams and religious leaders under the leadership of Jama Masjid Rajouri, Khateeb Ghulam Rasool held talks with administration and decided to suspend strike for two days.
“We have decided to suspend call for two days. The administration has also sought one day time and we will give them time to arrest the guilty,” a Muslim leader said, wishing not to be named.
He said they will intensify the strike and bandh would be extended in coming days if their demand is not fulfilled.
Talking to Rising Kashmir, Imam Jama Masjid, Khateeb Ghulam Rasool said the police has not arrested those involved in the assault in innocent persons.
“Mohammed Hamid and his wife were returning home few days back with a buffalo, when they were intercepted by the VHP and Bajrang Dal goons near the Police Station Rajouri. Without fearing any action from the police, RSS backed goons attacked the couple. The police took no action against them. The victim, who is himself a police man was brutally assaulted by the saffron workers and when his wife came for rescue, she was also assaulted, in which the woman was hit on the face. In this assault, the woman’s tooth was also broken,” community alleged.
They said the victim allegedly ran inside the police station seeking help from his own department.
“However, he was followed inside by the saffron people, who allegedly in-front of the SHO Rajouri Police Station assaulted him. The SHO too beat him up. This shows the gravity of the situation,” they further said.
Mohammed Shafqatm a social worker said that most Hindu community members have expressed their anger against such incidents which has created uneasiness in the district.
“This was not the isolated incident. Earlier, too several assault incidents have taken place in which Muslim community was targeted,” he alleged.
He said that they were invited by the IGP Jammu zone Danish Rana for talks but they did not go there to meet him.
“The police have not arrested the RSS workers involved in the assault of the couple. We held demonstration against such incidents in past too, but no one was arrested,” he alleged.
Recalling past incident, another person Mohammed Rafiq Choudhary said that they have Auqaf land in Nowshera and want to construct a Masjid on this land.
“Even as we have our own land, but the saffron people don’t allow us,” he said, adding another person was recently assaulted by VHP people when they (RSS people) caught him with two buffalos at Alfa Gate. Similarly, a tipper driver was assaulted without any reason in Jawahar Nagar (Rajouri town). Besides this, a picture of religious place was shared on a Whatsapp group by the BJP leader and Muslim community had protested against this incident too seeking his arrest,” said a local named Riaz.
To chalk out future course of action, he said, Imams of different Masjid have decided to hold meeting this evening in Rajouri.
“We will discuss the prevailing situation and will take decision accordingly.”
PDP MLA from Rajouri, Mohammed Qamar Choudhary, when contacted told Rising Kashmir, “PDP is in alliance with BJP and both should respect sentiments of each other. The elements involved in assaulting people without any reason should be booked and dealt with iron hands.”
He accused civil administration and police for their failure to curb elements who have let loose a region of terror.
“A police constable was beaten up outside the police station by some goons and when he went inside the police station, SHO Police Station Rajouri also beat him up,” MLA Rajouri alleged.
He said, no action against the SHO was taken by the police department and the people have been living under fear.
Last night, sources said, the police in Rajouri arrested “two saffron workers”, while the main accused was yet not arrested.
According to a local, the people in the border town have been frightened with the “increasing saffron activities”.
“Now-a-days, they openly work against our community and indulge in violence. However, they are not arrested. Police is unable to arrest them. One of the Bajrang Dal leaders who is the main accused is freely roaming in the town but he was not arrested, even as he has been named in the FIR,” residents told Rising Kashmir.
