JAMMU AND KASHMIR

JAMMU AND KASHMIR

From 1846 to 1847, Kashmir was one and the largest of over 500 semi-independent princely states of what was then called the Indian Sub-Continent. These princely states which were under overall British suzerainty covered only a fraction of the Land and the population of the Sub-Continent. The rest, called British India, was under direct rule of the British.

Towards the end of the first quarter of the present century, both the main political parties of the sub-continent, Indian National Congress and All India Muslim league had accelerated the struggle for freedom of the subcontinent. The Second World War further strengthened their movement and the British had to pledge them freedom after the war. The war ended in 1945 and by the end of 1946 it was clear that British Indian would be divided into two independent states. One confirmed by the declaration made by the British government on June 3, 1947 and on August 14 and 15, 1947 respectively came into existence two independent states of Pakistan and India, Pakistan comprising of the Muslim majority and India of non-Muslim majority areas of British India.

Although the ruler of Kashmir was Hindu but 77 % of its population was Muslim. Moreover the State was geographically far more contiguous with and economically far more dependent on Pakistan than on India hence Kashmir had, in principle, to choose only between complete independence and joining Pakistan. There was no justification whatsoever for Kashmir becoming part of India. Since the ruler was Hindu, he would not like to make his State part of Muslim Pakistan where his own position would be unsafe. So he was seriously thinking of declaring full independence for the State. His Prime Minister, Pundit Ram Chand Kak, the first local Prime Minister from a well known Hindu family, fully supported him in his plans. But the Indian leaders had different and nefarious intentions. They wanted to grab Kashmir by hook or by crook and started adopting most unfair and conspiratory means to achieve their e nd.

They got the Prime Minister of the State dismissed only four days before the expected declaration of independence. Some very shortsighted Kashmiri leaders especially Late Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad were also instrumental in removal of Premier Kak who was replaced firstly by a staunch pro-Indian general and subsequently by Justice M. C. Mahajin. Mahajin, as a member of the Boundary Commission had earlier got, most dishonestly and with the help of its chief Red-Cliff, a large area of the Punjab with Muslim majority (which should have gone to Pakistan) included into Indian territory to create a road-link between Kashmir and India. When these activities of their own ruler and Indian leaders came to the knowledge of Kashmiri Muslims especially of the militant tribes of what is now called Azad Kashmir, they rose in revolt against the ruler. In the mean time armed tribesman from Pakistan’s tribal areas also entered Kashmir.

The ruler left his summer capital (Srinagar) and fled to Jammu, the winter capital. Pakistani tribesmen were knocking at the very door of Srinagar when the ruler made a request to India for military help which India preconditioned with Kashmir formally joining Indian which the ruler had to do under duress. But before his instrument of accession reached Indian capital, Indian leaders had already dispatched their armed forces to Kashmir by air which captured Srinagar airport just before it was to fall to Pakistani tribesmen. The first Indian contingent advancing towards areas under occupation of the tribesmen was routed but Indians started having an upper hand over tribesmen once they settled down. After some time Pakistan sent its regular armed forces to Kashmir to check fast advance of Indian force. Most of the tribesmen had got involved in loot and plunder hence lost the sympathies and support of the local population.

In the meantime India took the issue to the United Nations whose Security Council, after hearing the representatives of Indian and Pakistan, appointed a commission, the UN Commission for India and Pakistan (UNCIP) to deal with and settle the issue. The Commission after detailed negotiations with the governments of India and Pakistan, adopted two resolutions (of Aug. 13, 1948 and Jan. 5, 1949) which were agreed to and signed by representatives of both the countries. These resolutions provided for cease-fire in Kashmir and its demiliterisation followed by a plebiscite in the whole of Kashmir under UN supervision to determine the future of the State. Cease-fire came into effect on the first of Jan. 1949 but demiliterisation could not be brought about mainly due to wrong interpretations of the UNCIP resolutions by India. A number of UN representatives, sent one after the other, also failed to persuade India to see reasons. Pakistan also committed some follies. After 1957 Indian, started flatly refusing to implement UNCIP resolutions claiming that Kashmir was her integral and constitutional part.

India got two UN Security Council resolutions reiterating Kashmiri’s right of self-determination vetoed by the former Soviet Union in 1957 and 1962. Indo-Pak talks held in 1963-64 under US, UK auspices also failed to bear any fruit mainly due to unfair intransigent attitude specially that of India. Again in 1965 India and Pakistan waged a war which followed the armed people from Azad Kashmir and Pakistan entering Indian occupied Kashmir, could not also solve the issue. The Simla Agreement of 1972 between Indian and Pakistan which provided for ‘final settlement’ of the problem concerning the future of Jammu Kashmir State also failed to bear any fruitful results. And though the Kashmir issue went into cold storage after Indo-Pak War in 1971,.

Kashmiri people rose themselves into revolt in 1988 and started armed struggle to liberate their motherland to make it an independent and sovereign State with a democratic, federal and non-communal State-Craft. For the last two decades Kashmiris are facing unabated human rights violations at the hands of Indian armed forces. Nevertheless the armed struggle and the unparallel sacrifices by Kashmiri for the last over 20 years have pushed Kashmiris to the front row from oblivion, as the most important party to the issue which can no more be ignored.

A three-day shutdown here over the government's delay in announcing an AIIMS-like facility in the Jammu region turned violent on Friday when protesters clashed with police.

Police used batons and tear smoke shells to disperse protesters shouting anti-BJP slogans as they tried to force entry into the party office in Kachi Chaawni area of the city.

A committee of lawyers, traders, industrialists and civil society members called for a three-day shutdown beginning on Friday, accusing the central government of going back on its promise of setting up an All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

Normal life was hit as shops, public transport and other businesses were adversely affected.

However, government offices, banks and post offices functioned normally.

"The Jammu region will remain shut on July 31, August 1 and 2," Abhinav Sharma, chairman of the committee and president of Jammu Bar Association said at a hurriedly convened midnight press conference.

"It became clear on July 20 that BJP had taken recourse to dirty politics as it failed to stand by its commitment to ensure that AIIMS for Jammu region is announced," he said.

Deputy Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Nirmal Singh had given a written assurance that AIIMS would be announced before July 21.

A shutdown was today observed in Lal Chowk and adjoining areas of the city as shopkeepers downed shutters protesting the 'suspicious' death of a youth, whose body was fished out from Jhelum river yesterday.

Shops and offices in Lal Chowk, Budshah Chowk, Maisuma and Gaw Kadal remained closed following death of Owais Ahmad Fafu, who was working as a salesman at a Shop in Gaw Kadal area, police said.

Fafu had gone missing few days earlier and his body was fished out from the river at Shadipora in Bandipora district yesterday.

As soon as the body was handed over to the family, violent protests broke out in Maisuma as youths started pelting stones at the cops posted in the area yesterday.

The protesters were alleging that Fafu was murdered.

Police have started an investigation under section 174 of the CrPC to ascertain the cause of the youth's death.

A police official said the shutdown today was by and large peaceful with no major incident of violence reported from the affected areas.

Meanwhile, life in rest of the Valley remained normal.

A Pakistani woman, who claimed that she wanted to meet Bollywood actor Salman Khan, has been arrested here for allegedly crossing into India through Attari border without valid travel documents.
The 27-year-old woman identified as Chanda Khan gave varying reasons for entering India including that she was going to Delhi to pray for her son at a dargah and also that she was looking for her lost uncle.

While the security agencies are probing as to why the woman, who hails from Karachi in Pakistan and is married to one Salman Khan, entered India, Chanda said that she wanted to catch a glimpse of "Bajranji Bhaijaan" actor Salman Khan.

The recently released cross-border drama, which is rushing to the Rs 300-crore club in India, has gripped audience in the neighbouring Pakistan as well.

The film is about a Bajrangbali (Hanuman) bhakt named Pawan Kumar Chaturvedi's (played by Salman) journey from India to escort a six-year-old mute Pakistani girl back to her village.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Government Railway Police (GRP) Makhan Singh said, "A Pakistani woman travelling without passport, visa and a ticket on Attari-Delhi special train no 14002 was arrested late last night here."

On being asked as to how the woman boarded the train without valid travel documents, the official said, "Customs department and not railway police is not responsible for checking travel documents."
"During interrogation, the woman claimed that she went through checking at both Lahore and Attari. When contacted, the authorities at Attari said they had no information about Chanda Khan," he said.
The ASP said that 771 Pakistani Rupees have been recovered from her.

The woman has been booked under Sections 3/34, 20 of the Indian Passport Act and handed over to GRP Attari, he said.

‘Un-Islamic marriage’: Pakistan court issues warrant against Bollywood actress

A Pakistani court today issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against controversial actress Meera, who has also worked in Indian films, over her "illegal and un-Islamic marriage".

The district and session court Lahore directed the police to produce her before the court on next hearing on September 17.

Petitioner Attiquer Rehman, who married Meera in 2011, told the court that she has tied the knot with another man (Capt. Navid) without divorcing him, which is not only illegal but un-Islamic.
He said Meera had committed a 'grave sin' and should be punished accordingly.

"Meera is still my wife and without getting divorce, she cannot enter a second marriage under the Sharia law," Rehman pleaded.

Meera married the airlines captain in 2012, who later divorced her following the appearance of a sex video on social media of his with Meera.

A petition was subsequently filed in the Lahore's session court that ordered the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to register a case against Meera and Navid for earning a bad name for the nation.
However, the FIA inquiry has been pending for the last one year.

The actress has starred in films like "Nazar" and "Kasak" in India.

Run for your Life- Pakistan Today: Were Jinnah and Zafarullah Khan Wrong?
Posted by

Express Tribune: Op Ed: Pervez Hoodbhoy: Eighteen bloodied bodies, shot Gestapo-style, lay by the roadside. Men in army uniforms had stopped four buses bound from Rawalpindi to Gilgit, demanding that all 117 persons on board alight. Those with Shia sounding names on their national identification cards were separated out. Minutes later it was all over; the earlier massacres of Hazara Shias in Mastung and Quetta had been repeated.

Having just learned of the fresh killings, I relayed the news on to colleagues and students at the cafeteria table. Some looked glumly at their plates but, a minute or two later, normal cheerful chatter resumed. What to do? With so many killings, taking things too seriously can be bad for one’s mental health.

In Pakistan one’s religious faith, or lack of one, has become sufficient to warrant execution and murder. The killers do their job fearlessly and frequently. The 17th century philosopher and mathematician, Blaise Pascal, once observed that “men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it for religious conviction”.

Equipped with just enough religion to hate those with another faith — but not enough to love their coreligionists — Pakistanis have mostly turned their backs on religious atrocities. Exceptionally grotesque ones, such as when 88 Ahmadis quietly praying in Lahore on a Friday were turned into corpses, have also failed to inspire public reaction. Mass executions do not interest Pakistan’s religious parties, or Imran’s Khan’s PTI. For them, only the killings by American drones matter.

Saudi Arabia Playing with Ceasefire in Yemen: Amir Abdollahian

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian deplored the Saudi aggression against Yemen as a strategic mistake, and said Riyadh is playing with ceasefire.

"Saudi Arabia committed a strategic mistake in Yemen and played with fire," Amir Abdollahian told FNA on Tuesday.

He noted that the Riyadh government is violating the ceasefire in Yemen and it is not taking it seriously.

The Iranian deputy foreign minister described the human conditions in Yemen as tragic, and said, "All countries should help the Yemeni people and the UN to halt aggressions and break the humanitarian siege of the country."

Amir Abdollahian said that the crisis in Yemen can only be solved through a political approach, and added, "Tehran sees resort to force in Yemen as the root cause of increasing deterioration of insecurity and spread of terrorism in the region.

On Sunday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham censured the Saudi bombardment of residential areas in Yemen, and asked international organizations, specifically the UN, to take urgent steps to back the Yemeni civilians against these attacks.

Afkham rapped the Saudi airstrikes on residential areas in Yemen's Ta'iz which resulted in the death and injury of 130 civilians, and said that “airstrikes on residential areas and killing innocent people, especially women and children, is a violation of the international principles of the international law.”
“Unceasing strikes on Yemen will fuel extremism and increase activities of terroristic groups such as the al-Qaeda,” she said.

Saudi Arabia has been striking Yemen for 125 days now to restore power to fugitive president Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

Hadi stepped down in January and refused to reconsider the decision despite calls by Ansarullah revolutionaries of the Houthi movement.

Despite Riyadh's claims that it is bombing the positions of the Ansarullah fighters, Saudi warplanes are flattening residential areas and civilian infrastructures.

The Monarchy's attacks have so far claimed the lives of at least 5,313 civilians, mostly women and children.

Violence erupts as LeJ chief Malik Ishaq is buried

malik ishaq
Angry protests flared into violence at the funeral for chief of the banned Sunni terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), Maliq Ishaq, officials said Thursday, as at least two people were killed in an apparent reprisal attack on a police checkpost.

Malik Ishaq, behind numerous bloody attacks on Shia Muslims, was killed in a shootout with police in the early hours of Wednesday, along with 13 fellow militants.

Police said violence broke out in Ishaq’s hometown of Rahim Yar Khan in Punjab when the bodies arrived for burial late on Wednesday evening.

“Protesters tried to damage a Shia mosque and private properties and attacked police with stones,” district police officer Tariq Mastoi told AFP. Mastoi said police flooded the streets with around 5,000 officers and brought the disturbances under control.

Hours later, a group of around 10 militants attacked a police post in Gujrat, sparking a gun battle that left two attackers dead and two policemen seriously wounded.

Malik Mansoor, a senior police official in Gujrat, said LeJ members armed with guns and hand grenades attacked the post apparently to avenge the killing of Ishaq and other senior commanders.
“One of the killed militants has been identified as Muhammad Mumtaz, who is a long-time activist of LeJ and was wanted in several cases of targeted killings,” he said.

Wednesday’s shootout appears to have wiped out much of the top leadership of LeJ, a driving force in a rising tide of violence targeting Shias.

Under Ishaq’s leadership, LeJ claimed responsibility for some of the bloodiest attacks on Shias in Pakistan’s recent history, including two suicide bombings in Quetta in early 2013 that killed more than 180 people.

Ishaq, who had been in and out of police custody in recent years, was arrested on Saturday and was being moved when loyalists attacked the convoy in Muzaffargarh. Those killed with him reportedly included Ghulam Rasool Shah, a hardline LeJ chief who acted as the group’s leader when Ishaq was behind bars.

Wednesday’s killings were the latest blow to militancy in Pakistan, where in the past year authorities have cracked down hard on the myriad insurgent groups that have plagued the country for a decade.
The offensive intensified after Taliban gunmen slaughtered more than 130 children at the Army Public School in December.

Pakistan police kill leader of anti-Shia militant group
Leader of the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) Malik Ishaq speaks during an interview with Reuters at his home in Rahim Yar Khan in southern Punjab province October 9, 2012.
ISLAMABAD: Malik Ishaq, the dreaded chief of banned Sunni sectarian outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, was gunned down along with his two sons and 11 others early on Wednesday morning by police in an alleged exchange of fire in Punjab's Muzaffargarh district.

While the exact circumstances of the killing remain unclear, police said the encounter took place following an attack on its convoy taking Ishaq and his sons to a detention centre. They were being taken to Shahwala in Muzaffargarh by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) to aid in the recovery of arms and explosives that it had seized allegedly from LeJ terrorists.

"As the police convoy was returning in wee hours on Wednesday, a group of militants on motorbikes ambushed it near Shahwala Jungle in an attempt to free Ishaq," Shuja Khanzada, Punjab's home minister, said. "Fourteen militants, including the LeJ chief and his sons, were killed in the battle, which ensued," he said and added that at least six police officers were also injured.

Ishaq, his sons and three aides, were arrested last Saturday on suspicion of involvement in sectarian killings.

He had spent 13 years in police custody for more than 80 charges of sectarian killings. He was arrested in 1997 and after serving nearly 14 years in prison, released on bail in 2011. Observers believe that Ishaq, accused in over 70 criminal cases, was never successfully prosecuted. He walked free in December 2014 after a decision by the Lahore High Court. Analysts had called his release by court as a reflection of state's weak judicial system.

"He has faced several murder trials but always been acquitted after witnesses refused to testify against him," said Nazrul Islam, political analyst.

Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, a violent Sunni militant group that is said to be aligned with al Qaeda and Taliban, has been accused of killing hundreds of Shias after its emergence in the early 1990s. It had claimed responsibility for the deaths of hundreds of Shia Muslims, including two bombings in the western city of Quetta in early 2013 that had claimed lives of more than 200 people.

Ishaq was also accused of masterminding, from behind bars, the 2009 attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore, which wounded seven players and an assistant coach, and had left eight Pakistanis dead.

WHO says nearly 4,000 killed in Yemen since late March

The World Health Organization (WHO) says nearly 4,000 people have been killed in Yemen since Saudi Arabia launched its airstrikes against the country in late March.

On Tuesday, the WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said that 1,859 civilians had lost their lives among the total of 3,984 people who had been killed in Yemen until July 19.

The UN official also said that some 19,300 people, including 4,200 civilians, had been injured during the time period.

Earlier in the day, Human Rights Watch slammed Riyadh for “committing an apparent war crime” against the Yemeni nation, after it repeatedly attacked a compound housing families of workers at the Mokha Steam Power Plant. Saudi Arabia has resumed bombing targets in Yemen despite a five-day ceasefire declared by Riyadh on July 26.

Riyadh has been accused of using cluster bombs in the Harad region of Yemen's northwestern province of Hajjah.

On March 26, Saudi Arabia began its military aggression against Yemen – without a UN mandate – in a bid to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement and to restore power to the fugitive former Yemeni president, Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a key ally of Riyadh.

Bahrain: 77% of Shiite Top-Ranking Students Didn't Get Their Choice of Scholarship

In 2011, the Bahraini Ministry of Education, refused for the first time to publish the results of the university scholarships in the local newspapers and restricted the announcement of the results to students only, as each student is required to enter a password on the Ministry's website to find out his\her results.

2011 is the year that witnessed the eruption of the February 14 uprising and a bloody crackdown campaign launched against it. This decision was also part of this campaign and part of a strategic view that clearly and directly depended on Al-Bandar report conspiracy, in an attempt to expedite all its plans that were set before 2006.

The conspiracy lasted for 5 years. The result was that thousands of students either used up all their parents' money, were forced to leave the country, studied a major they didn't like, were held back or completely dropped out of school! Many of them had their futures destroyed and turn into a nightmare!

In 2015, the number of the honors students, whose GPAs higher than 99% and who did not get any of their first three choices, skyrocketed. This triggered a wave of anger among people. Some of the students were only granted a 400 BD (1058$) scholarship, that does not even cover 10% of their tuition fees in any university.

Jalila Abdul Jalil Hassan, who scored the 11th place in Bahrain and the first in her school with a GPA of 99.2%, will not study medicine, although the ministry granted three of her schoolmates who scored the 11th place scholarships to study medicine in the Arabian Gulf University and Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

Jalila cried a lot, not because she did not expect she'd be deprived of the scholarship, but because she is the second case in her family. Two years ago, her sister was also deprived of a medicine scholarship and her parents were forced to pay for her education. Jalila's parents do not afford paying her tuitions too. This even intensifies the oppression this family is suffering from.

Zeinab Al- Sayed Mohammad Mahdi, who shares the same 17th rank on the honors list with top-ranking student Fatima Mohammad Ali, whom Bahrain Mirror published a story about her in a detailed report, was also not granted a medicine scholarship.

Mustafa, Mohammad Ali Radi's son, one of the Bahrain 13 figures, turned himself in to the police with his head held high and holding his honor degree certificate to serve what was left of (the retaliatory) prison term after he was convicted of "assembly" and sentenced to 3 months in prison. Mustafa chose to go to jail during the past month of Ramadan to keep what was left of his hope of pursuing his university studies.

Mustafa who has a GPA of 98.8% and who was nominated for the Crown Prince scholarship was oppressed twice: first, when he went to prison holding his honor degree certificate and the other time was when the ministry prevented him from studying his first choice (medicine) although he occupied the 7th rank among male students in Bahrain, although the ministry allocated 11 medicine scholarships to students of Public schools for boys.

This; however, was not limited to public schools, for two of the top-ranking students in private schools with 99.9% GPAs were not granted their first preference: a medicine scholarship.
Despite the GPAs, vacancies and educational standards that prove that these students deserve medicine scholarships, three students of 94%, 93% and 90% GPAs were granted medicine scholarships.

A student of a 97.7% rank did not have her wish to study engineering, while her schoolmate who scored 94% was given the same engineering scholarship that was not listed as her first choice.
A survey conducted by an independent party stressed that 77% of Shiite students whose GPAs exceed 95% did not get their choices of scholarships.

As for one of the students who studies in the scientific field (Physics and mathematics) filled all the 12 available choices and was granted his last choice: Tourism. However, he later found out that there were still available scholarships after the distribution in the same specialties that he and hundreds of other graduates wished to study.

This year, the ministry did not announce any study abroad scholarships as well except scholarships to some Gulf States. A WikiLeaks cable has recently disclosed that Bahraini students are being sent to Gulf States, such as Saudi Arabia: the Saudi Embassy in Manama sent a letter to the Foreign Ministry of Saudi Arabia stressing that the nominated student is from a prominent Sunni family.

UNICEF praises Ayatollah Khamenei's Fatwa in support of children's education

"A fatwa issued by Ayatollah Khamenei in this regard (educating children of the neighboring counties) is a very beautiful example of international solidarity," the UNICEF envoy said, addressing a ceremony on the occasion of a report on international educational assessment for everyone in 2015.

He reiterated that Iran has provided exemplary support for the children of the crisis-hit neighboring countries.

"Over 250,000 children from Afghanistan and Iraq are studying at the Iranian schools," he added.
Murzi said the UNICEF is very upbeat that Iran provides educational services for its neighboring countries and the country can play as a role model for the Middle East and Asia.

Ayatollah Khamenei in a recent fatwa has urged the country's education ministry and the concerned bodies to help the refugee and immigrant children in Iran to improve their educational level.

Jammu: Amid protests by political parties, the chain hunger strike of the AIIMS coordination committee (ACC) demanding setting up an of AIIMS here entered its ninth consecutive day on Wednesday.

A massive protest demonstration by Congress party activists was held at Bishnah in Samba district today and effigy of Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh was burnt over the issue of denial of AIIMS and failure of government to fulfill the commitment.

The committee also took out a candle light protest march today in Jammu city in protest against the failure of the demand in which large number of people from different walks of life including civil society groups of Jammu would participated.

"The huger strike has entered 9th day as a fresh batch of protesters today took their turn to sit for the day-long hunger strike. The strike will continued till demand is not fulfilled", Chairman of the ACC, Abhinav Sharma said.

The ACC resumed the strike on July 21 - after calling off their first leg of strike - but not a single state government representative has so far tried to contact us, he added.

ACC, an amalgamation of over 70 organizations, is spearheading the agitation for setting up of an AIIMS in the Jammu region.

Terrorism a war of survival for Pakistan: Army chief General Sharif

In a series of tweets, Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Asim Bajwa quoted the army chief saying terrorism is a “war of survival for Pakistan” while it remains a “conflict for the rest of the world.”

Determined to defeat terrorism, Asim Bajwa, quoting the army chief, said that Pakistan’s enemies are stoking terror to destabalise the country.

The tweets come a day after General Sharif was presented the Guard of Honour by Italy’s military at their headquarters.

General Sharif is currently on a three-day official visit to Italy where he met his Italian counterpart and discussed military relations, defence cooperation and training.

The army chief highlighted Pakistan’s perspective on international security at the Centre of Internation Study in Rome which was widely accepted and appreciated by the audience comprising senators and members of the intelligence.

Another tweet added that the international community acknowledges Pakistan for its efforts to eradicate terrorism.

With regard to relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the army chief described the relationship as “uniquely inseparable”.

Commenting on the ongoing Operation Zarb-e-Azb, he said that it is a “comprehensive concept against terrorism and would ensure that Pakistan would be freed from terror.” Further, he assured that progress was made in several operations across the country.

He also added that the operation would ensure peace in Pakistan and in regions beyond, adding that terrorists would not be able to re-establish strongholds in the region.

If Americans attack Iran, they will be sent back in their coffins

Ayatollah Sayyed Ahmad Khatami, a member of the Assembly of Experts, in his meeting with youth and Quranic activists stressed that the enemy has always tried and will continue to try to destroy the Iranian people’s religious sentiments and the Islamic Republic of Iran’s independence-mindedness, adding that throughout different periods they have pursued this aim in various forms.

Speaking to the youth in the city where the infamous failure of the Americans’ “Operation Eagle Claw” occurred in 1980, he advised them to visit museums and witness for themselves the enemies’ crimes against the Iranian Islamic Revolution.

Ayatollah Khatami noted Iran’s undisputed power during its recent nuclear negotiations with the P5+1 group of countries, saying that today Iran was on one side of the battlefield and the six superpowers that it negotiated with are on the other side, but Iran was able to apply all of its power during the negotiations, and was successful.

His Eminence emphasized that Iran’s future is quite bright, and added that during the nuclear negotiations, the enemies tried to polarize Iranian society and we must prevent their plots.

He explained that the United States’ negotiating team was made up of 120 individuals, but Iran’s negotiating team only consisted of 20 individuals. Despite this imbalance, the Iranian negotiators used all of their abilities to defend their nations’ rights and independence. “Thus, we must keep our heads up because we live in a country that no power has the right to overlook,” he said.

Regarding the Islamic Republic of Iran’s military power, Tehran’s Friday prayers’ leader said that the ridiculous comments that the United States’ government has made since the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was signed on July 14th and their announcement that they have left “all options on the table” shows their ineptitude because they know well that if Israel behave cheekily for even a moment, Tel Aviv and Haifa will be razed to the ground.

Ayatollah Khatami said that the Americans’ usage of the phrase “all options are on the table” cannot be used as their slogan because they know that Iran is a strong country. “This is nothing but rhetoric and the United States only aims to apply this phrase to maintain their reputation in the global arena,” he argued.

He stressed that no American military threat is a threat to Iran, saying: “If they invade, they will be going back home in their coffins.”

The renowned scholar stated that weakening religious beliefs, spreading moral degeneration through the proliferation of satellite channels, spreading political degeneration increasing animosity against Wilayat al-Faqih (Guardianship of the Jurisprudence), and spreading dissemination are four of the enemies’ targets. “The insightful Iranian people cannot allow the enemy to achieve their sinister goals,” he stressed.
Ayatollah Khatami pointed out that the enemy is trying to polarize Iranian society and the country’s Islamic system in order to fulfill their vile purposes. “With their hostile media, the enemies are trying to polarize society and dominate the country,” adding: “This is especially true in regard to the nuclear agreement.

Saudi authorities pressure Shi’a cleric to leave the country

Saudi authorities have called on Hujjat al-Islam Shaykh Abdul-Karim al-Hubayl, the Friday prayers’ leader of the eastern town of al-Rabi’yah to leave the country.

With the excuse that terrorist organizations have made threats against him, Saudi security forces have notified the prominent Shi’ite cleric that they do not have the ability to protect his life and stated that he must depart the country as soon as possible.

Saudi security forces have previously issued threatening messages to Shi’a clerics. Hujjat al-Islam Shaykh Hasan al-Saffar, the Friday prayer leader of Qatif, was previously forced to leave Saudi Arabia.

Activists and political experts have stated that Saudi threats against Shi’ite scholars are proof of Saudi complicity with Takfiri terrorists. They also complained about the negligence of the Wahhabi regimes’ security forces to prevent the infiltration of terrorists into the Qatif region, which is predominantly Shi’a.

The Saudi regime's weak security response toward Takfiri terrorism has led to dozens of people being killed or wounded, mostly due to the fact that the Public Committee staff responsible for security in the country and the cities have been negligent in fulfilling their duties.

Ali al-Ahmad, a Washington-based political analyst has stated that the Saudi government has been funding and supporting anti-Shi’a terrorist groups in the Middle East in the past 25 years at least.
Some sources have stated that the recent threats by Saudi officials against Shaykh al-Hubayl began after the terrorist attack on Imam Ali (A) Mosque in the village of al-Qadih on May 22.

This attack on Shi’ite worshipers, which was later claimed by ISIL, led to the martyrdom of 21 people and wounded 121 others.

After the attack, Shaykh al-Hubayl condemned the incident and called for all sides to confront ISIL and for the state to take responsibility for their actions in the media and educational arenas and to fight seriously against Takfiri terrorists.

His Eminence also referred to the recent passing of an anti-terrorism law in the United Arab Emirates, and emphasized that more than ever, Saudi Arabia must implement a similar law.

Terrorsit Malik Ishaq: The life and death of a terror kingpin

Malik Ishaq, along with his two sons and 11 other militants, was killed in a ‘shootout’ in Muzaffargarh on Wednesday as he reportedly attempted to escape police custody.

Ishaq was the leader of banned outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), a sectarian terrorist organisation closely aligned with al Qaeda, together with the Tehreek-e-Taliban and Jundullah.

Ishaq along with Akram Lahori and Riaz Basra formed LeJ in 1996, all former members of another proscribed organisation Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), after developing differences with the SSP leadership.

Besides allegations of hate speech and being even involved in some of the worst sectarian attacks, including deadly attacks on the Shia Hazara community, Ishaq was also accused of executing the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore in 2009.

After spending 14 years behind bars, the LeJ chief was released on bail by the Supreme Court in July 2011 after the prosecution failed to produce any concrete evidence which could implicate him in any of the 44 cases of culpable homicide he was accused in. Since then, he was mostly remained under house arrest.

In last 20 years, as many as 72 judges and prosecution lawyers requested to shift to another case, went on leave or refused to hear the case on personal grounds against the LeJ chief, his sons, deputy chief Ghulam Rasool and his sons.

Ishaq was also put on a US list of global terrorists and the group he founded has claimed responsibility for the deaths of hundreds of civilians.

Following is a timeline of significant incidents since the LeJ leader’s release till his death:

Decemeber 2011: A review board of the Lahore High Court (LHC) extended the detention period imposed by the Punjab government Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance 1960 ; however, he was released by LHC in January 2012.

January 2012: The LeJ chief attended the Difa-e-Pakistan Council in Multan. Although ex-spymaster Hamid Gul denied his presence at the rally, LeJ spokesperson confirmed that Ishaq was on the stage at the rally.

August 2012: Ishaq was again arrested from Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport upon his return from Saudi Arabia after performing Umrah only to be set free after 12 days.

September 2012: Ishaq was given the position of vice president in the banned Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamat (ASWJ), formed by remnants of SSP, after differences erupted between ASWJ chairperson Ahmed Ali Ludhianvi and Ishaq on organisational matters within the ASWJ.

January 2013: Ishaq’s organisation claimed responsibility for a terrorist attack at a crowded snooker club on Alamdar Road, Quetta, which left at least 93 people dead and over 150 wounded.

February 2013: LeJ claimed responsibility for another horrific attack on Shia Hazaras when a massive bomb ripped though a busy market in a Hazara neighbourhood of Quetta, killing at least 67 people and injuring nearly 200.

February 2013: Following the attacks on the Hazara community in Quetta, Ishaq was detained by authorities under the Maintenance of Public ordinance at his residence in Rahim Yar Khan.

December 2014: After a detention of six months, a three-member review board of the LHC dismissed the provincial government’s application seeking extension of Ishaq’s detention. However, just days after LHC’s decision, he was again detained for two more weeks after an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) Multan sent him on judicial remand to Multan jail.

July 29, 2015: The LeJ chief, along with 13 militants, was killed in Muzaffargarh during a ‘shootout’ after gunmen attacked a police convoy and freed him as he was being moved, police said.

LAHORE: Malik Ishaq, chief of banned sectarian outfit Lashkar-i-Jhangvi, his two sons Usman and Haq Nawaz, and 11 other terrorists of Sipah-e-Sahaba & ASWJ were killed in an alleged exchange of fire with police personnel late on Tuesday night.

At least six policemen were injured in the alleged encounter.

Killer Ishaq and his sons were arrested by the Counter-Terrorism Department a week ago. Following their latest arrest, the police had interrogated them and had subsequently taken them to Shahwala in Punjab's Muzaffargarh district to aid the police in recovering weapons and explosives, sources in the CTD said.

The encounter appears to have taken place as ASWJ Sipah-e-Sahaba militants attacked security forces and tried to free Ishaq who was killed in the ensuing exchange of fire, security sources say.
A spokesman for CTD Multan said Ishaq, his two sons, one Ghulam Rasool Shah and two other accused, all from Lashkar-i-Jhangvi, were taken to Muzaffargarh by the counter-terrorism department to aid in the recovery of arms and explosives.

The spokesman said that when the police party was returning after making the recovery, it was attacked by some 12 to 15 gunmen who succeeded in freeing Ishaq, his sons and the other accused and fleeing away on motorcycles.

The militants were met with by SHO CTD police station who had quickly been informed about the attack on the police party and was travelling on the route that the militants had taken, the spokesman said, adding that that’s how the encounter ensued.

The SHO challenged the militants, resulting in the encounter in which six police personnel sustained injuries, the spokesman said. They were shifted to the district headquarters hospital.
The spokesman added that 14 militants, including Malik Ishaq and Ghulam Rasool Shah, were killed by the attackers themselves.

A large amount of weapons and ammunition was recovered from the attacking men and an investigation has been initiated into the events.

All bodies have been shifted to DHQ Muzaffargarh. The bodies of Ishaq and his sons will undergo a postmortem before being taken to Rahim Yar Khan, where he was based.

Lashkar-i-Jhangvi is regarded as the most extreme Deoband (Wahabi) terror group in Pakistan and is accused of killing hundreds of Shias after its emergence in the early 1990s. The organisation is also said to have links with Al Qaeda and Daesh (ISIS).

The organisation was banned more than a decade ago by former president Pervez Musharraf.
Ishaq, who is a leader of the feared organisation, has been implicated in dozens of cases, mostly murder.

He was arrested in 1997 and is implicated in dozens of cases. He was released on bail in July 2011 after serving a jail term of nearly 14 years.

Since his 2011 release he has been frequently put under house arrest as his sermons raised sectarian tensions. He was also arrested in 2013 over deadly sectarian attacks targeting the Hazara Shia community in Quetta. The first attack took place on Jan 10, 2013 targeting a Hazara snooker hall and killing 92 people and the second bomb attack occurred on Feb 16, killing 89 people. The attacks were claimed by Lashkar-i-Jhangvi.

Ishaq was also accused of masterminding, from behind bars, the 2009 attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore, which wounded seven players and an assistant coach, and killed eight Pakistanis.

The attacks saw Pakistan stripped of its right to co-host the 2011 cricket World Cup and jeopardised the future of international cricket in the country.

Damaged houses are seen one day after a Saudi-led air strike hit them in Yemen's western city of Mokha, July 26, 2015

A Saudi-led coalition carrying out air strikes in Yemen may have committed a war crime when it bombed two residential compounds, killing 65 people including 10 children, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said on Tuesday.

Last Friday's attack on two compounds at the Mokha steam power plant in western Yemen was one of several air strikes in Yemen's war that appear to have been unlawful but have not been investigated by anyone, the group said in a statement.

"Again and again, we see coalition airstrikes killing large numbers of civilians, but no signs of any investigation into possible violations," HRW's senior emergencies researcher, Ole Solvang, said. "If coalition members won't investigate, the United Nations should."

There was no immediate response from the Saudi-led Arab coalition to requests for comment.
The coalition has been bombing the Houthi militia and army forces loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh since March 26, aiming to push them back from southern and central areas and restore the country's exiled government.

In a statement in March about Yemen's war, the International Committee of the Red Cross said that under international humanitarian law, all countries and parties involved in conflict must distinguish between military and civilian objects, and uphold the principles of proportionality and precaution.

Friday's 24 attack took place near the coastal city of Mokha, in the Houthi-controlled governorate of Taiz, killing dozens of civilians including children.

"The Saudi-led coalition repeatedly bombed company housing with fatal results for several dozen civilians...With no evident military target, this attack appears to be a war crime," the HRW statement said.

HRW said it had visited the plant on Sunday and found no signs that the compounds were being used for military purposes. Residents said Houthi forces, who are the target of the coalition's campaign, had not been there.

Videos on social media appeared to show panicked civilians running for cover during the attack on Friday night, and large numbers killed and severely wounded in its aftermath.

Saudi Arabia's Arabiya news channel said on Saturday that the air strikes had targeted a military air defense base.

The statement said HRW had identified a military facility 800 meters southeast of the plant’s main compound, which plant workers said had been a military air defense base. The plant workers said that it had been empty for months.

Rights Watch has also accused pro-Houthi forces of apparent war crimes, saying such forces had killed two women and held aid workers hostage in Aden in April. In May, it accused the Houthis and some Islamist militias of using child soldiers. A Houthi spokesperson could not immediately be contacted for comment.
