Restrictions in Srinagar to prevent traders’ protest

Authorities have placed restrictions in and around Lal Chowk to foil an anti-government protest by traders against the delay in rehabilitating victims of the last year’s flood.

Police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed in strength around these barricades to thwart the proposed protest of the traders’ bodies.
Showkat Choudhury, President of Kashmir Economic Alliance – an amalgam of various trade bodies – has been detained at Police Station Zakura to prevent him from leading the demonstration.
KEA has called for a strike today to protest the ‘failure’ of government to rehabilitate the flood victims, especially traders, a year after the flood waters swept the valley, especially the Srinagar city.
At least 300 people were killed and thousands rendered homeless in floods last year. Properties and standing crops, worth thousands of crores of rupees were destroyed in the deluge.
